Was very happy to finally see this weird undead crime comedy thanks to Mike White and his Kast watch party this week (he actually programmed three films I haven’t seen but I could only do this one due to conflict). For a Cat III flick this one is pretty tame. Nothing sleazy or overly exploitive or gratuitous nudity on display. Rather it’s a very silly albeit often homophobic buddy cop type flick that borrows a bit from DEAD HEAT. And it’s so goofy that I’d classify it as horror fifth down on the genre list after comedy, action, science fiction and crime. tbh I don’t think there’s all that much in the way of horror.
The main guy, a cop portrayed by Shing Fui-On in his only leading role, is chasing the robbers when he gets crushed in a construction yard. A magical cat along with a lightning strike brings him back to life as an undead cop. But he goes about his life as normal even tho being undead leads to some silly moments. Plus he has a pregnant wife who thinks he’s gay bc he won’t be with her intimately. It’s quite weird.
The bulk of the film is just humor around this cop being undead and trying to deal with it w/o letting others know. Then there’s a big all out brawl with the robbers for the finale with some crazy sequences. Oh the main big bad is Jun Kunimura! I forgot that he did HK films early in his career (he also pops up in HARD BOILED).
Overall this movie is fine but not the hardcore Cat III I was led to believe; it’s a silly romp with some very cringe gay jokes.
