Saw something that had me look up this movie believing that I had already seen it. I was wrong but did learn that owned it on DVD, the old Anchor release, so I found it and plopped it in for a spin. It’s like a lesser VAMPIRE LOVERS that is definitely going for the Hammer Horror* aesthetic but without a more capable hand. Interesting that this Spanish director made these horror films outside of Spain (he also directed EDGE OF THE AXE set in California, for example) and there are “notes” in extras as to why Larraz chose to do so, which is pretty neat.
The movie does have some nice camera work and some good scenes w/the great backdrop. In a way it’s like a mashup of Jean Rollin and Hammer Horror, heavy on the sex and nudity with beautiful bisexual vampires in a gothic castle. I dig it and I like that these women (w/the exception of Anulka who was a Playboy Playmate) have more natural body types. Not perfect but still shapely and attractive.
*in the commentary the filmmakers mention Hammer a lot so it definitely was the intent to make a film in that same style. Apparently even the location was used by Hammer in some of their films. It is pretty damn cool castle and now a hotel. Would love to visit it someday.
