Unholy Women (Kowai onna), is a composite of three unrelated half-hour horror movies. A compilation of 3 separate short horror films (Rattle Rattle, Hagane, The Inheritance) written and directed by Keita Amemiya, Takuji Suzuki, and Keisuke Toyoshima respectively. The first segment, “Rattle Rattle”, tells the story of a young woman who is pursued by an evil other-worldly being. The second movie, “Steel”, concerns a young man who agrees to take the sister of his boss out on a blind date, drawing him into a world more frightening than he ever dreamed possible. The third and final episode, “The Inheritance”, is a supernatural tale of a woman and her young son, scarred by abuse and psychological trauma.

J-horror anthology with three segments. The first segment directed by Keita Amemiya is surprisingly the weakest of the bunch and moreso b/c it uses so many digital FX over his wonderful practical work from the previous decade. And it really doesn’t make a lot of sense. On it’s own this would be maybe a 4/10. Fortunately the next two stories really pull up the score.
The second segment features the often creepy Teruyuki Kagawa as car mechanic that sets up his younger co-worker won a blind date with his unusual sister. Like really unusual in that her upper torso is hidden under a burlap sack. It’s weird and I really dig it. This would be a fun short film to show between movies.
The third segment is just a good old fashioned “mother is fucked up” story with a great kid actor. Great sense of despair and dread.
