Viewing Notes

Every year DKUTV programs the two Toei produced Marvel Comics animated adaptations, Dracula and Frankenstein, and every year I miss them… until now! tbf I think they’re both on YT but haven’t been super eager to view them only b/c I haven’t heard good things. Now having viewed this movie DRACULA: SOVEREIGN OF THE DAMNED I can agree that this one in particular is not very good. Loosely based on the Tomb of Dracula comic book that Marvel released it compresses a lot of the main story into a 90 minute runtime for less than stellar results. It’s a really weird story, too, where Dracula is a good guy that loses his powers after an altercation with his “father” Satan. Also he impregnates a mortal woman who bears his child. There’s a lot more bizarre shit much of which doesn’t make much sense in this retelling. The comics probably handle it better but I give this a full star uptick for at least trying to tackle this batshit story.

This English dubbed version is the Harmony Gold production (Robotech) released by Vestron. The transfer wasn’t so hot but viewable. So weird hearing the voice actors I’ve come to identify with Robotech in things like this. For example Melanie MacQueen is the voice of Rachel van Helsing here but I’ll always hear her as Lisa from Robotech.
