Viewing Notes

Only took all summer and fall to finally get the Blu-ray from the library… sadly definitely *not* worth the wait. In fact, this is the worst Scooby-do thing I’ve seen. I would’ve been angry if I saw this in theater. Had a feeling I was gonna dislike this as soon as I saw that animation style, the CG model type over the old school cel animation (or a simulated look/feel). I really didn’t need to see an origin story for the Mystery Inc team or a parade of Hanna-Barbera IP.

Nothing like seeing a bunch of pop culture references that instantly date a movie. The most egregious one is the RBG callout specifically to say she’s a Supreme Court justice. Sure, it’s cool to mention RBG esp in a kids flick but perhaps handle it less heavy handed. But yeah so many current event stuff no one will get or give a shit about in a few years. The stunt casting of Simon Cowell as himself was a terrible choice. Also hate that they brought the Mystery Inc origin to present day.

I suppose since they wanted to reboot the property they recast all the primary roles except Scooby-do but I guess Frank Welker is the only one that can do that voice. Didn’t care for any of the new VO actors despite liking those actors. Will Forte as Shaggy was easily the worst. Didn’t like Zac Efron’s Fred, either. The rest of the supporting cast is almost a who’s who of popular voice actors.

Lastly, I hate that in this reboot they complete dismiss what makes Scooby-do, the show, good: a mystery! Instead they go with this big sci-fi adventure and bring in Blue Falcon and Dynomutt and Captain Cavemen and make Dick Dastardly the villain b/c hey let’s use all these HB characters. Ugh.

Wanna give this a lower score but maybe this will turn some younger fans to the original Scooby series and much better movies.
