Themes of voyeurism and unrequited love compliment Poe’s classic of murder and insanity in this superbly suspenseful loose interpretation. Anxiety-stricken librarian Edgar Marsh becomes infatuated with his next-door neighbor, but when he can’t have her, he resorts to murder.

A loose adaptation of Poe’s famous story with a frantic Laurence Payne as the socially inept Edgar Marsh who becomes smitten with Betty (Adrienne Corri) yet doesn’t see that she’s fallen for his best friend. So as the description plainly states, he kills his friend in blind rage then becomes haunted by his beating heart. A solid retelling even tho Edgar is a bit of a perv spying on Betty thru the window across the street. I don’t understand how she never closes her curtains even once.
