Attack of the Super Monsters (1983)

Directed by Tom Wyner, Toru Sotoyama

Action | Science Fiction | Animation

Overview

In the near future it’s discovered that the dinosaurs did not die off, but instead live on near the center of the Earth. The evil lord Tyrannus uses the mutated dinosaurs descendents to attack Earth in his effort to rule the world. Can Gemini Force, a group of four superpowered teens who’ve pledged to protect the Earth, stop his plans? Written by Mike Konczewski 70 millions years ago, the creatures known as dinosaurs mysteriously disappeared from planet Earth. Until now, it was assumed they were extinct. In reality, they had burrowed deep into the Earth and evolved into supermonsters. In the year 2000, the people from planet Earth were amazed and terrified by the greatest catastrophe ever known to mankind: the re-appearance of the dinosaurs. Under the direction of their emperor, Tyrannus, the creatures now seek to destroy mankind.

Viewing Notes

I don’t know how I never knew about this movie until today but holy smoke this is some wild shit. Seriously how did I not know about this??? It’s a combination of live action and animation. The dinosaurs are live action suit actors and whatnot with real miniature cities and ships. The animation is all the human characters and scenes. And it somehow works to varying degrees. It’s a little like a Thunderbirds mixed with Shogun Warrior / Jumbo Machinder facing advanced dinosaurs that can talk (!) and breath fire (!!).

I dunno what the backstory of this movie is but someday when I have more time I’d like to research the history of this. It feels like it was created to be a tv series but aborted and just mashed into a feature film. There are 4 distinct parts to this film (4 different dinosaur battles/dilemmas) that feels episodic. Jeez this is just so damn weird but also fun. This would be an ideal flick to fill the “kaiju” slot at B-Fest if they did smart programming.

Cool find on Roku’s own network of movies. First time I’ve viewed any of their selection (ad supported, natch).
