Viewing Notes

Missed this one at the Tsai Ming-liang series at Doc Films during the Before Times earlier this year. Honestly feels so much longer but I guess that series was this year and one of the reasons they programmed this amazing series was bc he was doing a US tour which of course was cancelled when everything went south. It was Ming-liang *and* Lee Kang-Sheng that were coming over and both Doc Films and Block Cinema were having Q&A events. Damn, what a fucking drag.

This is exactly the type of film I now associate with Ming-liang having seen a handful this year; quiet, contemplative, provocative, and an examination of the human condition. Didn’t realize this was an early work of his so it was wild to see the babyfaced Lee Kang-Sheng here. Also amusing to see the seeds of Ming-liang’s obsession with water and watermelons.

This transfer looked very nice so I’m wondering if there’s a decent Blu release for this. So many (most) of his films I’d like to own and throw on to just chill to people in odd situations.
