Viewing Notes

Finally finishing this series I started some months ago with my least favorite installment (and the only one I don’t own). This is also my first revisit since it was in theaters *four years* ago. Can’t believe it’s been that long already. In a better world we’d already have another movie in this franchise and with Milla back. I watched only one of the extras, the short featurette on the women in the film, and Ali Larter even says that she loves being called up for these films as if she’s on the bench waiting to get tagged in. Whatever they’re doing w/the new RE flick should instead be re-scoped and bring back *all* the women for a final mission movie.

After this viewing I like this movie a little more than I did sitting in the theater 4 years ago. It was so disappointing then so that’s one reason why I haven’t revisited it. Things I appreciate: Ruby Rose (totally forgot she was in this!), Ali Larter (of course), the mission premise and the large team that you know has gotta get killed off bc there’s too many of them.

What I dislike: the clunky expo drop to open this movie rather than doing it organically throughout the movie, barely touching on the final events of the previous movie and leaving some threads untouched (her “daughter”, Jill Valentine, Ada Wong, Leon, etc.), and some of general hokey-ness of the plotting just to get them from A to B. But what I hate the most is the editing. Holy shit the editing is whiplash inducing as if it was a goal to squeeze in as many cuts within a second for some of the action beats. It looks terrible and weakens the scene. I’d love to see a new cut of this completely re-edited by someone that understands how to present action scenes and thrilling moments.

All that said I hope to own this one someday and hopefully on 4K UHD if the set is still available by the time I can purchase it.
