True History of the Kelly Gang (2019)

Directed by Justin Kurzel

Crime | Drama | History

Overview

Set against the badlands of Australia where the English rule with a bloody fist and the Irish endure, Ned Kelly discovers he comes from a line of Irish rebels — an uncompromising army of cross dressing bandits immortalised for terrorising their oppressors back in Ireland. Fuelled by the unfair arrest of his mother, Kelly recruits a wild bunch of warriors to plot one of the most audacious attacks of anarchy and rebellion the country has ever seen.

Viewing Notes

Saw this at Walmart months ago and, based on the cast alone, looked interesting despite not having heard of the movie so I put the request in at my library InterLoan. Did not realize that for whatever reason (perhaps bc it’s just a “new” movie) that the waitlist would be so long. Finally got the blu and had a limited window to view bc it’s still in demand.

I’m ignorant of the real life Ned Kelly and his exploits so I don’t know what’s really true and where they embellished for the movie production but overall this is a solid flick. Definitely learned a few things about this period in Australian history during the mid to late 1800s. As mentioned, it’s the cast that drew me to this title and it’s the cast that makes this work. Essie Davis is particularly great… no shocker there. George McKay carries the movie as Ned Kelly and does it well enough. The supporting characters done by Russell Crowe and Charlie Hunnam are standouts. Thomasin McKenzie actually appears younger than she did in the last two films I saw her in so I wonder when this film was shot.
