Viewing Notes

Perfect kind of show to put on while sorting trash. So wild to watch this now and hear so many political jokes of that time and some of the casual racism. Estimate 70 percent of the jokes are political and so nuts how Hope is anti-democrat and really hammers on Jimmy Carter and his brother Billy. Also, the audience laughter is really annoying. Mark Hamill is one of the guests riding the wave of the Star Wars popularity but the bit he and Hope do is really bad (ex. Hope: “that was a scary movie! R2-D2 really scared me!” Huh??). Then there’s an entire SW sketch that’s not so good and particularly cringey w/Hope getting all grabby with Olivia Newton-John.

The collegiate all-american football team introduction is such a weird thing they did back then. Cool to see a few of those players went on to NFL greatness like Doug Williams and Earl Campbell. There’s another one of these specials from 1985 that started up when this one ended and it has that same ncaa football players thing. Just a bizarre thing they did back then I guess.
