Viewing Notes

DKUTV had another mashup “movie” in the lineup tonight for their Henshin Holiday event, which is all Christmas and winter episodes of tokusatsu tv shows. But like the previous Super Sentai mashup this one also has nothing to do with Christmas. No biggie really just odd these “movies” get included. And really these are just gloried episodes given special status bc they bring together two separate ongoing sentai series. Here it’s the Dekarangers and Abarangers, which are the dinosaur based rangers.

I like this mashup more than the one w/the Magirangers bc the DinoRangers (Abarangers) are more fun and weird. One of them has a baby? One is a chiropractor? So weird. There’s a fun sequence with all the female rangers battling the succubus but lose their ability to transform so instead they change into geisha. Or more accurately, dice dealers (the women who would often be in charge of shaking and displaying the dice in yakuza gambling houses) which was strange yet cool to see esp. when they pull down a sleeve as tradition when serving the dice to indicate no funny business and they reveal their sentai tattoos on their exposed back shoulder. Weird!

Before this DKUTV had two vintage Kamen Rider episodes the first featuring a wolfman and set during Christmas at an orphanage. The second one had a Snow Beast plus Hideyo Amamoto as the main villain. I really love the original Kamen Rider so much. That ep also had these women assistants to the original KR that fight and throw giant playing cards at the Shock Troopers, killing them!

Also caught the Christmas ep of the modern Kamen Rider Gaim (initially thought it was “GRIM”). This is easily the weirdest KR series I’ve seen, which is saying A LOT. There’s a whole team I guess to mimic the sentai template and they transform into fruit-based armored warriors. WTF this is so bizarre and yet hilarious when it happens. Goofy yet amusing and definitely aimed toward the younger set. I’d watch more of these even tho it’s such a departure from the original KR in concept. Surprised I haven’t seen any of the GAIM pop up in other KR stuff I’ve viewed. Guess I haven’t watched any KR from the last 5 or 6 six years when GAIM started in 2014. And there’s *NINE* GAIM movies listed in TMDb. Wow!
