Viewing Notes

Welp I like this movie… despite the corny plotting and bloat but definitely like it more than those on my TL. Without a doubt this movie has its problems and probably the biggest is the how this “monkey paw” object really works and its rules bc it really seemed like they were just all loosey goosey on that esp. as the movie progressed. Even in a fantasy / sci-fi flick there needs some rules to govern the core narrative or what’s the point. That entire end finale w/the “particles” was a real fucking stretch, bucko.

Probably the second biggest issue is the bloat. Wow you can feel in the first hour and it’s always pushing at the seams throughout its 2.5 hr runtime. I kept thinking “I like this movie… but I don’t think I wanna watch this again bc it’s too damn long and not worth it.” Which is unfortunate. Maybe I’ll give it another shot at some point but I still have revisited BvS so…

Not to be entirely negative I dig the ambition to really swing for the fences even if it’s a whiff. Have a feeling Jenkins got more liberties this time around w/o anyone to pull back on some of the material. I did appreciate seeing Pascal in a smarmy, sweaty role. Gal and Chris are still fun together with decent chemistry. I like the loss of power in WW to give her vulnerability. The kitchen sink approach to her origin / powers was amusing albeit goofy at times (seriously, the invisible jet??).

Overall, not the worst first movie I was fortunate enough to view in a theater this year.

I wasn’t planning on seeing this in theater since I do have HBO Max via my AT&T service. But over the weekend I saw a tweet saying that this movie was expiring on HBO on Jan 24th, which I didn’t realize was a thing. So last night I finally fired up the app via Roku but was having major issues with it. Either it’s the Roku or my wifi but it couldn’t handle the Dolby Atmos presentation. Would cut out and buffer and reload then would be super pixelated. Chugged thru the first 55 minutes until throwing in the towel b/c I wasn’t gonna view this movie that way. I do think it’s my wifi more than the Roku hence the reason I hardwire my TV to my router. But I couldn’t resolve the issue so I gave up. No WW84 for me.

Decided to check Fandango to see if any theaters were opening up so I that I may be able to catch the movie in a cinema at some point. Discovered that one of my nearby regulars was actually open for business, Streets of Woodfield! This was surprising given that all the other regulars— AMC Niles, Muvico, Village Crossing — were still closed (but apparently opening back up this weekend). Saw that WW84 was available. Since I did enjoy what I saw in that first hour I went to the matinee today and had the whole theater to myself and one other couple in row below mine. Sadly the movie didn’t get better but I’m satisfied and glad to have seen this on the big screen.
