Overview

Kongwen Lu is the author of a fantasy novel series following a heroic teenager, also named Kongwen, on a quest to end the tyrannical rule of Lord Redmane, under the guidance of a Black Armor. But through a strange twist of fate, the fantasy world of the novel begins to impact life in the real world, leading Guan Ning to accept a mission from Tu Ling to kill the author.

Viewing Notes

Braved the 4º weather for a big screen viewing of this new film from China. Figured the cinema would be empty today and I was right. Cool flick to see in theater given the excellent photography (not sure where in China this was filmed but I want to visit all those locations).

Such a wild genre mashup of modern sci-fi mystery thriller and mythical action fantasy. Won’t be everyone’s bag but absolutely my shit. Gets a little silly in that final setpiece but everything up to that is some solid genre mashing. On the modern side I like mystery (and Yang Mi who is exquisite as usual). On the fantasy side I particularly like the look of the Crimson Warriors (would make for a nice 1/6 scale fig).

Plenty of stuff here to soak up and enjoy.
