Viewing Notes

Was pleased to find another Toshiro Mifune film on the schedule that I hadn’t seen yet (for Mifune Sundays this month on DKU). This is an ideal sleepy Sunday afternoon actioner w/Mifune as a ninja trying to secure three scrolls. He falls for a princess (Yoshiko Kuga) despite his ninja code of living a heartless life, which his ninja brother (Koji Tsuruta) is always reminding him. Lots of convoluted story as the movie goes on and rival clans chase after the scrolls but Mifune is the anchor for it and makes it a fun romp. The Akira Ifukube score is also really good. Sadly this was a p muddy transfer that even looked like garbage on my macbook. Since it’s another Toho release it seems unlikely we’ll get a better edition which is really sad. There’s a sequel to this that I’d love to track down.
