Viewing Notes

DKU ran an Ultraman double feature for Ultra-Monday, neither film I had seen so I made this one my dinner & movie since it wasn’t very long. Not being so keen on the previous Ultraman Zearth film I braced myself for more of the same. That made this easier to view bc it’s a very slight take on the Ultraman property and definitely aimed at the much younger set. Has that silly vibe I’ve often associated with Power Rangers. Perhaps even more goofy here with the protag losing to the Ultraman Shadow in the opening sequence than having no confidence to be Ultraman Zearth again.

The Ultraforce team has its HQ in a gas station to give an indication of how corny this version of Ultraman is. All that said, this isn’t as bad as the previous movie and given that it’s for children I get what they are going for here. Just not really my thing despite liking the look of both Ultraman suits.

Not sure if Josef (DKU) planned it this way but both films in the double feature are near opposites; Ultraman Next geared towards adults and this one for children. Also weird is that I thought this was an early ‘00s production but then they show NYC and it’s a shot of the WTC towers! So I immediately checked to discover this was a mid-90s series. No wonder the CG is so rough.
