Viewing Notes

My friend Sanjoe really loves the Demon Slayer tv series so when the movie was scheduled he was all about going to it… to the point of buying our tickets (me & Pedro). Pedro and I haven’t seen the tv series. I was willing the break my rule of not watching anime feature films when I haven’t seen the tv show since Sanjoe was buying and really wanting us to see it.

It’s fine. And it doesn’t really require much knowledge from the tv series to follow what is going on despite dropping the viewer right into this world and going from there with no context or character backgrounds. Supposedly this starts where the last episode of the show ends. This is a fun and very action oriented battle-the-big-bad anime feature, a standard plot with heroes and villains. It looks great and has some nice moments. If I were allowed another genre I’d add horror bc it does have some horrifying visuals tho not scary.

I’m curious about the tv show and will give it a watch. I’m more curious how this was the number one movie at the Japanese box office last year. Maybe due to the soft lockdown / pandemic? There’s just nothing here that puts it on the level with something like YOUR NAME. Even if I had watched the series this feature length film just feels like a string of episodes sewn together.
