Was expiring on MUBI so I finally gave it a spin bc I don’t believe it’s easily viewable otherwise, which is a shame. Wish I hadn’t sat so long on it and instead caught it sooner via my OLED TV b/c this really is a pretty movie. Cathy’s Yan’s visual style really shines here and I can see how the producers of BIRDS OF PREY wanted that same flair for that movie. That said, it’s incredible that she was chosen based of her first and only feature film. Huge props to her and WB for giving her such a big IP after this movie.
This is one of those films where there are multiple stories happening and ultimately cross and become connected. Also this is listed / considered a comedy but I wouldn’t go that far. Sure, there is absurdist humor (esp. towards the end) but it’s mainly drama for the majority of the runtime. And often a sad, desperate drama in most of the stories. It’s based on true events that occurred in China back in 2013 when 16,000 dead pigs were found floating in the Huangpu River in Shanghai. Yan crafted this story around that event and it’s largely engaging with some great characters. However, it doesn’t really stick the landing by the end but it’s a fun ride most of the way.
