Viewing Notes

Having only seen 2 or 3 of the SAW films I’m unfamiliar with the mythology established by the franchise so I can’t really determine what this movie got right or wrong compared to the rest. I generally enjoyed this installment and like the police procedural take. The traps are still quite gruesome but it’s Chris Rock that carries this movie to make it interesting despite the weak screenplay. I am eager to view the other films that came before to get a better sense of how those develop the concept and overall through line.

As expected, this was a nice one to see in the Dolby Atmos DLX theater however I really don’t like the use of a sudden loud score cue to announce a jump scare. Let the scenes be scary on their own w/o the huge burst of sound. I really like Marisol Nichols and wondered why I haven’t seen her before but she’s done mostly TV work.
