Viewing Notes

Breakfast & a movie: the Seijun Suzuki birthday marathon via DKUTV was today and this was the only movie I hadn’t already seen so I didn’t want to miss it as the only other way to view it right now is via Criterion Channel, which I don’t have.

This is your typical rowdy juvenile delinquent flick that was also popular in states during this time. The exception here is having Suzuki’s eye and hand behind the camera and direction to give it that desperation and general angst. Truly rotten young men guided by their ignorance and testosterone. This is a good film for what it is and does but it will always be difficult to accept how young women are treated in these types of pictures, re: rape culture.

I really like Jiro’s gf Toshimi portrayed by Yoshiko Nezu, who only made a handful of movies. I think she could’ve gone on to be a big star. She has so much charisma and personality in this role.
