Dinner & a movie: aka Hanuman vs. 7 Ultraman (its original Thai title), another Ultraman movie I hadn’t seen but only heard about. I may even have a file or bootleg DVD of this one. Anyways, I just wrapped up painting so the timing was perfect to grab a bite and watch this crazy movie about the Hindi monkey god Hanuman. This was a co-production between Thailand and Japan (Tsuburaya Productions) where the on-location stuff in Thailand was handled by one team and the miniatures and suit actors where done in Japan. Apparently due to some liberal uses of the movie and re-releases, Tsuburaya has disowned this film. That’s unfortunate b/c it is a fascinating movie if not all that great of an Ultraman movie.
Bandits robbing the heads of Buddha statues kill a child trying to stop them. The child gets revived by Ultra Mother and imbued with the spirit of Hanuman. Meanwhile a scientist has created rockets to launch into the stratosphere to make it rain and accidentally awakens five kaiju (all repurposed from Ultra tv shows). Hanuman battles them but is soon outmatched so six Ultra brothers show up to give him a hand. The battles are actually p decent. It’s all the other stuff that drags the movie down.
