Tackled two blindspots tonight. This first one was prompted by the sad news of Ned Beatty’s passing at 83yo. He had a helluva career as a character actor and this film is no exception. He’s billed third after the two big stars. As for the movie:
ACAB
Cops be corrupting cops. That old chestnut. I like that it’s set and shot on location in New Orleans. I don’t think Dennis Quaid needed to do the Cajun accent. Nor do I think his character needed to be named “Remy” (it’s all just too much “let’s make sure everyone knows this is about New Orleans!”). That said, Quaid is such a charismatic young stud here. Perfectly paired with Ellen Barkin’s demure DA. Coincidentally, both actors the same age (32yo at the time of release). The story gets a little out there but having these actors really goes a long way to improving the movie. Beatty is great, too, as the police chief dating Quaid’s mother (the awesome Grace Zabriskie).
Fun movie that was nice to see in the Secret Cinema but sadly the Prime transfer is a pathetic 1.33:1 and not very crisp.
RIP Ned Beatty July 6, 1937—June 13, 2021
