Viewing Notes

Watched this one at Ron’s place in the Secret Cinema while waiting for them to arrive from Phoenix. TY to Ron for letting me crack open this one in his absence. This has been a Jackie Chan blindspot for a long time (~20 years?) bc the premise always put me off (as in problematic). Back when I would rent 4 for 4 VHS tapes from VideoMania down the street I would get all the JC flicks and watch them. Most were the dubbed US versions and cropped 4:3 but at least I could see them. This is one title I always skipped.

Since it’s JC title that I haven’t seen I wanted to give it go and was glad that Ron had ordered it. It’s def a strange film in that Sammo is the mentally challenged little brother to Jackie, who reluctantly takes care of him but wants a different life (marriage + career). So this movie really gives Jackie the chance to stretch his acting chops. Lots of melodrama between him and Sammo (and the supporting cast). Jackie is good but that story / premise is not so good.

What redeems the movie for me is this insane motorcycle / car chase towards the finale that leads into this crazy brawl at a construction site that looks dangerous AF. There’s an excellent extended fight between Jackie Chan and Dick Wei. That’s all good stuff. The melodrama however… oof.
