Buttoned-down veteran LAPD detective Roger Murtaugh is partnered with unhinged cop Martin Riggs, who — distraught after his wife’s death — has a death wish and takes unnecessary risks with criminals at every turn. The odd couple embark on their first homicide investigation as partners, involving a young woman known to Murtaugh with ties to a drug and prostitution ring.

With the recent passing of Richard Donner I wanted to view one of his films that I hadn’t seen in a long time. This one def counts as I couldn’t say when was the last time I viewed it… perhaps college? I did see the sequel on the big screen during that time. Anyways, it’s p wild what stuck with me over these years and what I had forgotten. What I love the most is seeing the old Hollywood Blvd before it turned into what it is now.
Hilarious that all the gunshots sound like cannon explosions. True to 1980’s form. I like this movie but it’s a little overstuffed. Forget it was set at Christmas but totally checks out since Shane Black wrote the screenplay. She isn’t credited but I immediately recognized Joan Severance from the brief glimpse she has on-screen. I’m gonna watch LW2 as that’s the one that always stuck with me more but probably haven’t seen it in 25+ years so we’ll see.
I had requested the LW set on Blu from my (new) library system but they pulled the DVD set. When I checked the system I discovered they only have it on DVD but use a pic of the Blu set. WTF
So I returned it and just viewed this via HBO Max. Didn’t look particularly good but maybe a little better than the DVD.
RIP Richard Donner April 24, 1930—July 5, 2021
