Viewing Notes

Had this one on my watchlist for a while so I was pleased to see it on the Cinephobe.tv schedule. The transfer they have isn’t so hot (awful, actually, looks ripped from a 4x3 movie channel broadcast back in the day) but I thought there was a more recent Blu release out now?

Anyways, this would’ve been a *perfect* movie for the BTSNAT TAKES MANHATTAN marathon. Totally shot on location in NYC in a variety of places including 42nd Street. I love seeing NYC depicted in ‘70s film (and ‘80s, to be fair). This one lands right in the middle between both decades but guessing it was shot and produced in 1979*. Still has some of the grime and sweat of that city plus the ethnicity of its inhabitants. Of course, being of this late 70s period also full of ethnic slurs. And full nudity of the women working the peepshows when Brolin’s character is looking for the stripper that witnessed his daughter being abducted.

There’s also some fun early character work by the likes of Mandy Patinkin as the Puerto Rican taxi driver and Dan Hedaya as the vindictive old detective. Julie Carmen is also great. I like the movie a lot but it does get a little weird w/the kidnapper (Cliff Gorman, another solid character actor) and the kid. Brolin is good but looks so out of place with his Grizzly Adams appearance throughout the movie.

*had its first screening in January 1980 so definitely a film of the 1970s.
