Viewing Notes

Not often you’ll find a JP film set in and shot in Aomori prefecture. Also neat to hear the Tsugaru-ben dialect of that region. Very refreshing to see and hear. This film is a delight and more than just a coming-of-age story but very layered in how it deals with a family dynamic of a single parent + grandparent living together in addition to a budding female relationship. There are a few scenes that really got me and had me appreciate how director Satoko Yokohama really lets those moments play out. Creates a new meaning to the scene. I wouldn’t call this a comedy but there are a few humorous moments, as well. Feels a lot like a live action version of a Ghibli film, one of their reality based films like From Up on Poppy Hill. Very similar vibe/tone.

Noticed that the TMDb rating is 40 percent. Seriously. You’d have to be some real hateful jackass to hate on this movie.

This is one of those rare movies that I could probably watch with Yumi and she would actually enjoy it. Partly for the humor and female-centric story but also bc she plays the sanshin and the girl in this film plays the shamisen. Some really cool performances, too.
