Clearly this is a personal story for both director and writer, who also stars in the movie. Very nice acting throughout given the challenges of jumping backwards into the timeline and all the emotions involved. P much knew how this was gonna play out with the first interaction between friends. During that sequence they walk by a Mister Donuts location I recognized… and sure enough it’s the one in Shinjuku.
Gaku Hosokawa is the real standout here as the titular character (and writer). Perhaps that’s why he’s so good b/c he’s performing the character he wrote and it’s very personal to him? For 2/3 of the film I was like, “this is fine. I get it.” but it really comes together in the final act which hit me the hardest.
