Second film we watched from JAPAN CUTS 2021 and an ideal follow-up to Toyoda’s WOLF’S CALLING. Love how he fashions this period film to be an indictment of present day mishandling of the pandemic. So Fucking Cool. Not sure if this will be included in the box set but I hope so!
I noted this in my WOLF’S CALLING notes from last year’s JC fest: what is really great about filming period pieces in Japan is that there a places all around the country that still look like Edo Period Japan as in this short film. Like, you can just roll up and kick away a few cans and bottles and cigarette butts and start shooting. Definitely gonna watch this one again during my viewing window.
