The soldiers no longer know why they are at war, and when it even started. Daily and dutifully they march to the river and shoot at the opposite village from 9 to 5 – orders are orders after all. They’ve done so for decades. When private Tsuyuki is transferred to the marching band, people keep asking him what use music is in times of war.

JAPAN CUTS did this movie a disservice. Had I know this was a satirical dry comedy with a biting critique about senseless forever wars I would’ve watched this much sooner! This has the kind of absurd humor I appreciate. Super impressed with the lead actor whom I recognized from the award-winning MARI AND MARI. Entirely different character here and provides the thru line for the story. There are a few poignant moments but this is really a string of amusing sequences that will either work for the viewer or be completely tedious.
This is the type of mid-tier film I could see playing Fantastic Fest. Weird enough for the right audience. I read a review that totally did not get the humor and felt the movie suffered for it. My reaction is the opposite; the repeated bits remain funny bc THEY KEEP HAPPENING in an ongoing war THAT KEEPS HAPPENING. Guess that was lost on the reviewer that wanted something more accessible. ::shrug emoji::
