Viewing Notes

Beautiful 4K restoration for this colorful yet problematic film. Despite being of their time I find it harder to look past the brown face in older films such as this. This one wouldn’t have been so bad had they used more of the Indian cast in the supporting roles but they did not. It’s amusing when so many of these “Indians” are nearly a head taller than Debra Paget who is probably around 5’4” or so. It’s distracting as is the German dialogue but hey yeah I get it.

That said, it is an enjoyable first parter with awful men in every role including the protag who says, “I’m not gonna visit their secret temple.” Then proceeds to do just that. The only characters I like are Paget’s Seetha and her slain assistant. The shot on location scenes are wonderful plus the crazy Fritz Lang soundstage sets are fun. The large bosomed Devi is particularly amusing.  Looking forward to watching part two of this epic.
