Viewing Notes
After viewing SHANG-CHI again I wanted to view more Michelle Yeoh movies… and this one I haven’t seen since it debuted in IMAX. It’s such an odd film from the production to the story. Produced by the Weinstein Company, the actors spoke in English probably to give it better global appeal. I tried viewing the Mandarin dub but it’s not the same actors voices and the subtitles don’t match it. So it’s really weird. At least it is Yeoh and Donnie Yen doing the English dub. Probably several others of the primary cast as well.
Wanted a Yeoh flick but got bonus Yen and Natasha Liu Bordizzo. Funny that I wasn’t crushing on her then (5 years ago when this was released) but rather Juju Chan, who is still quite wonderful. Also recognized Veronica Ngo, too. The story is weak with barely any connective tissue with the OG CTHD film but if you just accept the story as given it’s fine compared to many in this fantasy wuxia sub-genre. Most of the action is good even if at times over edited. Hard to beat having both Yeoh and Yen on display.
Perhaps the strangest thing is how digital everything looks. Like putting live actors in a video game. Feels very artificial a lot of the times and with so many characters and backstory flashbacks there isn’t enough character moments to make it all matter. That said, I still enjoy this movie and wish it were available to own with a bunch of BTS extras.
