aka SINKING OF JAPAN, a loose remake of the 1973 film with the same title. Not sure why someone went around and updated the title to “JAPAN SINKS” for all these films but maybe to align w/the recent anime series? Guess it is the actual translated title. Anyways, this isn’t very good. Watchable but too much melodrama and lulls that remove any intensity or thrills from the dire situation. The movie gets so bogged down by unneeded drama and relationship issues instead of just being a disaster thriller. Overly long and not compelling. I do like Ko Shibasaki as the rescue team member that refuses to leave Japan bc some dude loves her and wants to “save” her. Fuck that noise.
Oh worth noting that Mao Daichi is one of the primary government officials and looks A-mazing at 50yo. I recognized her from R100. She looked great in that, too. This broadcast film was part of the Shinji Higuchi birthday marathon on DKUTV.
