Dead End (1969)

Directed by Chang Cheh

Drama | Romance

Overview

In the mid-sixties Chang Cheh changed the face of female dominated films with his male dominated, violent kung-fu films. Dead End was the start of a new force that lasted 6 years, the first film to star David Chiang and Ti Lung under director Chang’s discerning eye. The trouble all begins when Chen Hung-lieh’s character disapproves of Ti Lung’s character courting his sister.

Viewing Notes

Kinda wild that Ti Lung’s first feature film (opening credits: “introducing Ti Lung”) in a starring role with his soon to be longtime onscreen buddy David Chiang directed by Chang Cheh for Shaw Brothers was a drama / romance! The description used for this film at TMDb is amusing, “known for his violent kung movies starring these two actors… here’s a drama.” ::LOL EMOJI::

This is a cool flick to see both these actors at the beginning of their career esp. Ti Lung with such a meaty leading role. He’s a womanizer that falls for the wrong girl and when told he can’t be her he just wants to be with her more. Typical. He and Chiang are both so good here I wish we would’ve gotten more films like this in addition to the kung fu flicks. I love the huge HK street set they use. Wonder what other Shaw movies utilized that set.
