When I was looking for more Tony Leung films to watch (after seeing SHANG-CHI again) I learned that he was in the sequel to the blockbuster Monster Hunt, the top grossing film in China that year (worldwide gross $387Million which is saying a lot bc it didn’t do well in any other country). I suppose that since that was such a big hit they could lure Tony Leung to sign on for the sequel. I don’t think this sequel is quite as good but having Leung as a huckster is a great addition to this mythology. He seems to be having a blast playing a con-man.
Besides Leung what I appreciate the most is that they developed a completely new story rather than rehashing the first film. This one picks up where that one ends. The visuals / sets look incredible; would love to see a BTS featurette show how they created those between digital and practical. Bai Baihe is still my favorite here and she has the best comedic chops. Decided that she reminded me most of Shelley Duvall in her appearance and expressions. I’m really glad that Eric Tsang only had a cameo in the beginning. The sub-plot with Leung’s Tu and Li Yuchun’s empress made zero sense to me but it made for a few fun exchanges between them… also a tad risque for a family flick. ;)
Viewed this VOD on IMDB TV (thru Prime) which had commercial breaks every 12-15 minutes or so. Annoying but at least it was an HD stream and looked amazing.
