Akira is a high school transfer student with a deteriorating relationship with his father. When he arrives at his new school, he stumbles onto a classmate being bullied. His intervention triggers two new friendships — one with the victim Scott and the other with Elizabeth — the classmate who aids him after he is knocked out. Scott has a worse problem than the bullies — he has not come out at home yet. But Elizabeth may have an even bigger problem: she is a social pariah because she keeps acting as though someone or something is after her. Meanwhile, Akira’s home front situation is going from bad to worse.

Third film of CHFF 2021 for me and my first feature. Surprisingly shot and produced in Oshkosh, Wisconsin but also Japanese. Given the DIY indie production (and young filmmaker) this is actually pretty good. I like the director intro and outro after the film. While this isn’t a great movie much respect for making this feature with a solid premise and good characters. The entire “coming out” subplot is nice but does nothing for the ghost story. I guess the director / writer just wanted to have a positive aspect about being a gay teen in his film. Totally cool with that. Also I wouldn’t call this a horror movie but it does have a supernatural spin for the main plot.
