Back on my Tony Leung train and another one I had to get back to the library. Had to view the DVD since that’s all either Interloan had but it actually didn’t look bad for a 2007 film.
For a Rated X movie… oh excuse me, NC-17, this is pretty tame stuff. In fact I’m not sure why it was rated as such as there are plenty of R-rated films more explicit than this. And here it’s such a small part of the film. It’s also an interesting choice by Ang Lee bc I don’t even think a lot of it was even necessary for this story. I’m glad he did go for it bc it’s more evocative but the greater premise of the resistance trying to assassinate this terrible man I found more compelling than the fake romance.
Did not know until the I watched the Making-Of featurette that this was Wei Tang’s first feature film (she had done a couple of TV series). She auditioned and Lee liked her and her backstory a lot so she got the role. She doesn’t talk about the sex scenes but it had to be scary for her plus acting against a legend. Glad she got to go on and do more good work after this and wasn’t blacklisted for doing nudity / sex scenes.
