Had this one earmarked when I decided to watch more Tony Leung films this year. Really only remembered the guqin scene which is still great yet shorter than I recalled. Still not crazy about the much of the battle sequences and find them a little boring. What I like the most is the drama and political intrigue. Letting these great actors just do their thing.
Because if my mixed positive reaction I never bothered to watch Part 2! So now I will finally cross it off the list sometime this week.
Watching the making-of featurette I’m stunned that the early buzz (pre-production) was really negative towards Kaneshiro’s casting announcement and even more hateful towards Lin Chi-Ling being cast in her first feature film opposite Leung. It’s so crazy that ppl and tabloids responded that way. Both are excellent in this.
I guess Leung dropped out or quit so they were thinking to replace him with Chow Yun-fat. That would’ve weird I think.
