Viewing Notes

Fairly sedate for a big time, big budget propaganda film. That’s probably to its detriment bc a lot of this is rather dull. Had they leaned into it this might be more interesting but instead I was fighting to keep my eyelids open.

Of course the main draw is all the celebrity cameos including Jet Li who has a brief scene with a couple lines of dialogue near the beginning of the movie. Donnie Yen gets a nice moment as the artist to declare which new flag he likes the most and later comments on the lyrics to the national anthem. Sadly Vicki Zhao gets only one line. Ziyi Zhang, who I didn’t even know was in this until she suddenly appears, says a couple of lines to Chairman Mao.

Andy Lau has a decent supporting role for ousted President Chiang. Did not see Jackie Chan or Stephen Chow, but I’m pretty sure his appearance was a blink and you’ll miss it. Just super fascinating to see these big stars that lead their own films agree to participate in this as cameos. My guess is that they had to participate and wasn’t Much of a choice.
