The Wonderful World of the Brothers Grimm (1962)

Directed by George Pal, Henry Levin

Fantasy | Adventure | Family

Overview

The Grimm brothers Wilhelm and Jacob, known for their literary works in the nineteenth century, have their lives dramatized. Wilhelm fights to write something entertaining amongst the sea of dry, non-fiction books they write and he sets about collecting oral-tradition fairy tales to put into print. Their life story is countered with reenactments of three of their stories including “The Dancing Princess,” “The Cobbler and the Elves” and “The Singing Bone.”

Viewing Notes

Unexpected Christmas movie! The cobbler segment has elves that help him make shoes for the holiday customers. I chose to view this bc it reminded of the movies I’d watch on Sunday after church.

I note when there is a good transfer via TCM. This is an awful transfer. Apparently there is some controversy around the restoration of this print bc it was shot in 3-camera Cinerama. It was the second of only two films shot this way and there is reported damage of the available negatives. Or it’s just costly given the format. It’s unfortunate bc this transfer is so dark and murky and diminishes some of the enjoyment. The first segment with Yvette Mimieux and Russ Tamblyn is quite wonderful, too.
