Viewing Notes

Not as bad as I was led to believe yet this is nothing special, mostly flat and very by the tropes. The good: scenes shot on location in Chicago* (Montreal getting most of the work), Bruce being more engaged than usual, solid cast. The bad: fucking Mancow Muller as one of the ongoing local radio DJs (ugh x 1000), a much less interesting (safe?) reimagining of the source material, and Chicago painted as this crime ridden city (“Murder City” ::vomit::).

Probably would’ve rated lower had I seen this in 2018 when it was released. Can’t believe it’s already been 4 years since that time! And the movie was held for a while bc of all the mass shootings. Looking at this now thru a current lens I’m a little softer on this due to Willis’s condition. He’s still quite up the task here and this is likely his last leading role, which is unfortunate.

Interesting that Joe Carnahan still gets the writing credit. Apparently he was supposed to write and direct then had a falling out over the acting choices. Wonder if his version would’ve had some edge to it.

* Kersey lives in Evanston and works at a NW Chicago hospital (it’s shown on the west side of the Dan Ryan heading towards downtown) yet the film captures him bouncing around River East and the Loop during the day like “we really want you to know he’s in Chicago and not some Canadian city oh look Marina Towers!”. So funny to see.
