Three bank robbers, Eijima, Nojiri, and Takasugi, flee the police and escape into the mountains. At an inn high in the Japanese Alps, Eijima and Nojiri encounter a young woman and her father, as well as Honda, a mountaineer. The inn folk do not realize their guests are wanted criminals and the visitors are treated with great kindness. Honda volunteers to lead them over the mountains, but Eijima’s paranoia endangers all of them as they make the perilous trip.

DKUTV programmed this for a Toshiro Mifune tribute. I’ve wanted to see this for a long time since it’s the first feature film of his plus he co-stars with Takashi Shimura (screenplay by Akira Kurasawa). This is a really good movie and should be released by Criterion. I know they’ve had on their streaming channel for a long time and maybe that’s the main way to see it. The on-location photography is excellent. Had to be a challenge to make this movie given that most of it takes place outdoors in the winter snow on mountains.
The score is so obviously Akira Ifukube it was almost distracting. Primarily bc he repurposed most of this score for the Godzilla films so it’s weird to hear all those kaiju music cues in this crime drama thriller!
