Tales of a Golden Geisha (1990)

Directed by Juzo Itami

Drama | Comedy

Overview

The film stars two of Itami’s regular actors, Nobuko Miyamoto as a geisha who brings luck to the men with whom she sleeps, and Masahiko Tsugawa as her unfaithful, sometimes partner. As well as showing her relationships with the man she loves and the men who employ her, it satirizes corruption and the influence of money in Japanese politics.

Length 118 minutes

Viewing Notes

Another film programmed for the Akira Takarada celebration weekend (his birthday + recent passing). Also another Juzo Itami joint I haven’t seen that once again stars his muse Nobuko Miyamoto. She’s the titular character that brings luck to those that she associates with but of course men being men can’t keep their dicks in their pants so she’s either cheated on or sexually assaulted. Takarada portrays one such skeevy dude that rapes her. Very out of character for him but he’s good being an awful person.

The movie is fine but Miyamoto is miscast here. She truly is a great actor but it’s a hard sell to believe this 45yo (at time of release) woman is a teenager embarking on becoming a desired geisha. The entire crux of the story is how men want her because she’s this *young* beautiful former geisha that brings them luck. For most of the film the character is in her twenties but not once do we believe it. Again, Miyamoto is very good but even she cannot provide the illusion of being twenty years younger here.
