I don’t recall the pearl-(no pun intended)-clutching when this movie was released in 2003 and features a horrific army of skeleton pirates that slaughter nearly an entire ship of naval soldiers. Seriously.
Anyways, the revisit that Liam O’Donnell has been doing w/the PotC flicks definitely inspired me to want to revisit them. I was never crazy about this movie but 13 years since my last viewing has changed my opinion. This really is a fun bigtime blockbuster popcorn flick. Depp really built a career out of this franchise and deservingly so. He’s excellent and knows the assignment. The other MVP is Geoffrey Rush; my god is he great in this. Top tier performance. Of course I love Kiera which I’ve noted before.
What I really noticed the most on this long overdue revisit is the extraordinary setpieces and set design. This really feels like a lived in world and some of the sets are spectacular. The entire siege on the town by the Black Pearl is terrifically orchestrated. Also worth noting that the digital FX hold up marvelously. The skeleton work is excellent and I love how they transform in and out of the moonlight in the same shot so seamlessly.
Yeah this is a cool flick and it only took me 19 years to figure that out. hahaha
