Took me a few beats to get into this primarily bc it’s a Ming Dynasty period conspiracy drama that has some fantastical anachronistic action setpieces but is not a fantasy movie, unlike Detective Dee, Zu Mountain, et al. The action is p damn great but so clearly not of that time it is weird to watch. But once I accepted what they were doing with this I went along with it and enjoyed the ride.
I like the three Imperial Special Forces dudes that get betrayed and have to fend for themselves yet still feign loyalty to survive and escape. Besides the main story each has his own sub-story so there’s layers to film. It’s all quite entertaining as it unfolds. I’m looking forward to viewing the sequel to see where this story continues.
