Viewing Notes

Viewing this now it plays like an extended scene from ELVIS that was deleted. It’s the tour of the United States that Colonel Tom Parker convinces Elvis to do in lieu of going overseas. Incredible how much that movie got right and yet still didn’t really capture the true magnitude or larger than life person that was Elvis, which is crazy to think bc that movie was goddamn good. Rather mesmerizing to watch this and the performances.

One thing that struck me is once you get past all the big obvious songs Elvis was just bringing gospel music to the masses. Amazing. The whole thing, bc it’s this very specific period of the early seventies, acts as a time capsule. A lot of feelings. Called my dad afterwards just to talk about that time and what we did during those years.

Interesting credit in the end credits: Martin Scorsese, who did all the montage sequences. Pretty neat!
