Viewing Notes

They put this in the best screen in this side (20) yet I’m still amazed this is getting a regular theatrical run instead of a one or two night thing. I’m happy for the film and filmmakers and GKids but wow this is a very niche film that has very limited appeal.

Like even for a Japanese audience I wondered who this was made for but it is so peculiar and unusual. I half expected the few folks at my screening we’re gonna walk out. It’s that kind of fascinating movie that I can appreciate the big swings but probably won’t watch this again.

I knew about a third into the film that it had to be directed by Masaaki Yuasa. He definitely has a unique style that doesn’t appeal to everyone (fans of animated films) but always presents something interesting. I do like his other works I’ve seen but would place this movie below those.
