Viewing Notes

Finished off the set of films with the final installment which has the return of Jet Li as Wong Fei Hung and places him in the old west along with Rosamund Kwan’s Aunt 13 and Xiong Xin-Xin reprising his Clubfoot role. Despite Sammo Hung taking over the director duties, this is my least favorite of the six movies.

There’s some neat setpieces and the change of setting to America is interesting but the story is not very good. Perhaps it’s how both the Native Americans and Chinese are treated here that bugged me the most even if the depiction is close to truth with prevalent racism of that time. Frustrating to see it used as a plot device here and part of the main story.

There’s a making of on the Blu that was actually more entertaining because they chat with Tsui Hark and have lots of BTS footage. It was cool to see how they did some of those stunts.

Wish we got another installment that put Li and Kwan back in China to close out this series.
