Viewing Notes

Don’t think I was aware of this movie until it appeared on TCM this month. A US production filmed almost entirely in Japan (there’s a title card at the beginning indicating this which feels partly due to the lingering post-war sentiment). Quite a fascinating film bc it’s mixed English and Japanese but none of the Japanese is subtitled which is a neat device.

Babyface Cameron Mitchell is the father of the lost boy and Clint Eastwood is a rescue pilot in a few early scenes. Lots of good footage of Japan including Gion, the Geisha area in Kyoto, and the Miyako Odori performance which I was fortunate to experience. Hits a lot of the popular spots around Kyoto before finishing in nearby Nara at the famous shrine there.

Overall this is a pretty cool little film. Wish I had known of it sooner so I could watched with Yumi and get her reaction.
