Viewing Notes
One of the titles I picked up from Amoeba Records in L.A. in the import section (it was only $4.99). Have always wanted to see the full-length feature of this segment from the THREE… EXTREMES horror anthology. But I wanted to revisit the anthology first to compare this version. So I watched that anthology earlier this month and watched this tonight. Definitely expands in ways that I didn’t expect but also aren’t surprising.
There are lengthier sequences that were trimmed down for the anthology segment. Then there are entire story beats that are not part of the anthology segment. These are mostly around Mr & Mrs Lee’s marriage and the relationship between Mrs Lee and Miss Mei. They certainly add to the story but really aren’t needed to get the full impact of this tale. This is a v good movie and I believe Bai Ling won a Golden Horse for this. Not sure why she didn’t go on to do more work like this or characters like this. She’s great.
My only nitpicks are trying to buy that Miriam Yeung is old or unattractive. She’s actually younger than Bai Ling by 8 years! Granted Bai Ling is supposed to look younger yet be older in this movie I still had a hard time accepting that Miriam Yeung’s Mrs Lee was so obsessive about her appearance (at 30 years old in 2004).
