Viewing Notes

This is a Wong Fei Hung movie that lives outside the Once Upon a Time in China films, like a side-quel of sorts that has Jet Li in the role of Fei Hung. Directed by Wong Jing with action direction by Yuen Woo-ping this movie presses all the right buttons for me. As I was viewing this I thought that the action looked like Woo-ping’s style and yep! Guess I’ve seen a lot of his work this year.

Had to watch my first Gen DVD that I’ve had for 20 years or so that looks like total garbage (widescreen in the 4:3 frame with subs burned in and barely legible). Runtime is shorter than what’s listed on TMDb. Damn shame this one, to my knowledge, hasn’t gotten a restoration and proper release. Definitely needs it bc it’s really fucking great. The lion versus the centipede dance is outstanding.

The description here is only the partial premise. The story involves a corrupt sheriff (leader of the cope or guards) that’s in league with some bad monks that are trafficking young women. Wong Fei Hung gets involved to save the girls when Sharla Cheung’s character tells him she’s searching for her missing sister. Btw, I love Sharla and she is a super badass here! So weird that Gordon Liu went from being the hero in his early movies to being the villain. Maybe to continue getting work? Just so weird to me. Anyways it’s cool to see him and Jet Li mixing it up.
